Your First DIY Keyboard: A Practical Guide
Skip the confusion. Here's what you actually need to build your first mechanical keyboard — no filler, no gatekeeping.
Building a keyboard sounds intimidating. It isn't. If you can follow IKEA instructions, you can build a keyboard. The difference is that the result actually matters — you'll type on this thing every day.What you need
There are five components: a PCB (the circuit board), a plate (holds the switches), switches, keycaps, and a case. That's it. You don't need a soldering iron if you pick a hot-swap PCB — the switches just push in.Choosing a layout
The biggest decision is layout size. A full-size keyboard has 104 keys. A 60% has around 61. A 40% is even smaller. For your first build, go with a 65% or 75% — you keep arrow keys and a few function keys without sacrificing too much desk space.The parts list
PCB: This is the brain. Look for hot-swap sockets (Kailh or Gateron) so you can change switches later without soldering. QMK or ZMK firmware support is a must if you want to remap keys.
Plate: Aluminum is the standard. FR4 (fiberglass) is cheaper and has a softer sound. Polycarbonate is flexy and thocky. Pick aluminum if you're unsure.
Switches: Start with something linear and smooth. Gateron Yellows are the default recommendation — cheap, smooth, and available everywhere. If you want tactile, try Akko Ocean Blues or Boba U4Ts.
Keycaps: PBT plastic lasts longer than ABS and doesn't get shiny. A basic set in Cherry profile costs around ¥80-150 and will last years.
Case: Aluminum for premium, plastic for budget. Some kits include the case, plate, and PCB together.Assembly steps
1. Install stabilizers on the PCB (for spacebar, shift, enter, backspace)
2. Mount switches into the plate, then push the switch pins into the PCB sockets
3. Screw the plate+PCB assembly into the case
4. Put keycaps on

What it costs
A solid first build runs ¥400-800 for the kit, ¥100-200 for switches, ¥80-200 for keycaps. Total: roughly ¥600-1200. You can go cheaper with plastic cases and budget switches, or much higher with premium materials.
The point is: you don't need to spend ¥3000 to get a great keyboard. You need to spend wisely and assemble carefully. The rest is preference, and you'll figure that out by typing.
