Switch Specifications Explained

Every switch has a spec sheet. Here's what the numbers actually mean.

Actuation force

How much pressure (in grams or centinewtons) is needed to register a keypress. Light switches are 35-45g, medium are 50-65g, heavy are 70g+. Light switches are faster but easier to mistype. Heavy switches prevent accidental presses but tire your fingers.

Actuation point

How far down (in mm) you need to press before the key registers. Standard is 2mm. Speed switches are 1-1.2mm. Lower = faster response but more accidental presses.

Total travel

The full distance the key can be pressed. Standard MX is 4mm. Low-profile switches are 3-3.5mm. Shorter travel feels snappier but less cushioned.

Tactile force / Tactile point

For tactile switches: how much force the bump requires, and where in the travel it occurs. A sharp bump at the top (like Holy Pandas) feels very different from a gentle bump in the middle (like Cherry Browns).

Spring weight curve

Some switches have progressive springs (get heavier as you press), linear springs (consistent force), or slow springs (lighter at the bottom). This affects the overall feel beyond just the spec sheet numbers.

Stem material

Nylon (smooth, deeper sound), POM (self-lubricating, clacky), UHMWPE (very smooth, unique sound), polycarbonate (stiffer, higher pitch). The stem material affects both sound and feel.

Housing material

Nylon (warm, muted), polycarbonate (stiff, higher pitch), UHMWPE (smooth, deep). Bottom housing material matters more than top housing for sound.
