QMK: remap with Configurator or source

For QMK keyboards without VIA / Vial: build a keymap on the web, download the firmware and flash it.

Last updated 2026-10-15

If your QMK keyboard doesn't support VIA or Vial, or you want features those apps don't expose, build new firmware. The easiest way is the official web tool QMK Configurator; advanced users can edit the source.

Option 1: QMK Configurator (web, nothing to install)

  1. Open config.qmk.fm.
  2. Choose your model under Keyboard and its arrangement under Layout.
  3. Click Load Default to start from the stock keymap.
  4. Pick a layer (0, 1, 2…) and drag keycodes from the panel onto the layout, or click a position and press a key to assign it.
  5. Click Compile, wait, then click Firmware to download (.hex, .bin or .uf2).
  6. Flash it — see Flash firmware.

Option 2: edit the source (advanced)

For combos, tap dance, custom code and more:

  1. Install QMK MSYS (Windows) or the qmk CLI following the QMK newbs guide.
  2. Run qmk setup to get the source, then qmk new-keymap to create a keymap for your keyboard.
  3. Edit the generated keymap.c (or keymap.json) — syntax in Layers, keycodes and behaviors.
  4. Build with qmk compile -kb <keyboard> -km <keymap>, or build and flash in one go with qmk flash.
