ZMK: remap with ZMK Studio
Remap live over USB in the browser or desktop app — no reflashing.
Last updated 2026-10-15
ZMK Studio gives ZMK keyboards VIA-style live remapping: click, save, and it works — no rebuilding or flashing.
You'll need
- ✅ Firmware with ZMK Studio enabled
- ✅ Chrome or Edge at zmk.studio, or the Windows / macOS / Linux desktop app
- ✅ A data-capable USB cable
- ✅ To know which key is the unlock key (
&studio_unlock, see your manual)
Step 1: connect
- Plug in the keyboard.
- Open zmk.studio and choose USB.
- Pick your keyboard in the browser's serial port dialog and connect.

Step 2: unlock
For security, Studio shows the keyboard as locked at first. Press the unlock key (the key bound to &studio_unlock) and the editor unlocks.
Step 3: change keys
- Pick a layer on the left.
- Click a key position in the layout.
- Choose a new behavior, for example:
- Key Press — a normal key, then choose the keycode
- Momentary Layer — layer while held
- Layer-Tap, Mod-Tap — tap / hold keys
- Bluetooth, Output Selection — profiles, USB / Bluetooth switching
- Click Save to write it to the keyboard.

What you can and can't change
| ✅ Can | ❌ Can't |
|---|---|
| Change any key's behavior | Create new behaviors (new combos, macros) |
| Rename layers | Exceed the firmware's layer count |
| Use behaviors already in the firmware | Add new physical layouts |
| Switch between predefined physical layouts |
For combos, macros and other new behaviors, use Keymap Editor + GitHub.
Restore the default keymap
Choose Restore Stock Settings in Studio to return to the keymap defined in the firmware's .keymap file.
Common problems
- Keyboard not listed: try another cable; connect the central half; on Linux, make sure you can access serial ports (e.g. the
dialoutgroup). - Stays locked: press the unlock key; check the default keymap in your manual if you don't know which one it is.
